Elisa Vladilo's 1,550 sqm Environmental Painting Echo Surrounding in Trieste

artist · 2026-04-27

Venezuelan-born artist Elisa Vladilo has completed Echo Surrounding, a 1,550-square-meter environmental painting on the public roadway of the Porto Vecchio museum area in Trieste. The vibrant work in yellow, orange, purple, and fuchsia is part of the urban redevelopment for the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF), Europe's most important biennial scientific conference, to be held at the site. Vladilo's piece traces an unwritten history of the city, incorporating references to the Porto Vecchio's urban layout, including old railway tracks and disused industrial structures like the Centrale Idrodinamica and the Sottostazione Elettrica. This follows her 2007 public work My Favourite Place on Molo Audace. The painting aims to bring memory and future visions to the area.
