Elisa Macellari's Graphic Biography on Yayoi Kusama
A new graphic biography titled "Kusama. Ossessioni, passione, arte" by Elisa Macellari, published by Centauria Edizioni, chronicles the life and career of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama (born 1929 in Matsumoto). The book traces her journey from obscurity to international fame, covering her move to New York with sixty kimonos and two thousand drawings, early performances under Andy Warhol's wing, success, and later psychiatric hospitalization at Shinjuku's Seiwa hospital. Macellari drew inspiration from Kusama's autobiography and Heather Lenz's 2018 documentary. The project originated when editor Balthazar Pagani proposed the biography, coinciding with Macellari's earlier illustration of Kusama for an interview. The author spent about ten months developing the story, focusing on Kusama's childhood in Matsumoto, her 1960s New York years as a hippie and pacifist queen, and her mental illness as a recurring theme. Macellari found empathy for Kusama's struggles, viewing her transformation of psychiatric disorder into artistic expression as moving. The book presents Kusama as a voice for women in a male-dominated art world, overcoming geographical, economic, and social barriers. Although not an active feminist, Kusama is considered an icon for challenging sexism and traditionalism. The biography is 128 pages, priced at €19.90, with ISBN 9788869214424.
