Elisa Adams' Sculptural Journey from Chiropractic Practice to International Recognition

artist · 2026-04-19

Elisa Adams, a sculptor based in the Greater Boston area, began her stone sculpting practice in 2004 after enrolling in a museum school course. Her artistic journey has been shaped by a 40-year career as a doctor of chiropractic, which informs her understanding of balance and healing. Adams draws inspiration from Constantin Brancusi, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Barbara Hepworth, admiring their use of simplicity and suggestion. In 2019, she participated in the Symposium International de Sculpture in Morges, Switzerland, where she created 'Indomitable Spirit' from a 500-pound limestone block over ten days without power tools. This work was later acquired by a collector who uses a wheelchair and finds strength in its presence. Adams presented 'Formed by the Fates,' a series of 22 sculptures interpreting Tarot archetypes, at Three Stones Gallery in Concord, Massachusetts, over three and a half years. In 2022, she created 14 small sculptures for Boston Children's Hospital's garden spaces, designed to encourage exploration. Her current work explores Albanian heritage and pagan mythology while continuing abstract interpretations of the Major Arcana. Adams maintains both her chiropractic practice and studio work, viewing sculpture as a collaborative dialogue with material that reveals form gradually.
