Elettra Fiumi's film 'Radical Landscapes' chronicles the visionary Gruppo 9999

publication · 2026-04-27

Elettra Fiumi, an Italian filmmaker, journalist, and producer, has directed 'Radical Landscapes,' a documentary that uncovers the story of the Gruppo 9999, a pioneering collective of the Radical Architecture movement in Florence. The group, active between the 1960s and 1970s, included Giorgio Birelli, Carlo Caldini, Paolo Galli, and Fabrizio Fiumi—Elettra's father. After Fabrizio's death, Elettra discovered Super 8 tapes and other archival materials that led her on a decade-long journey to reconstruct the group's legacy. The film combines archival footage, animations by Alessandro Santillo and Milly Miljkovic, and collaborations with the artist duo Fossick Project. It highlights the group's utopian, interdisciplinary approach to architecture, which integrated music, technology, environmental issues, and pop culture. Key events include a 1968 projection on Ponte Vecchio, the opening of the Space Electronic nightclub in 1969, and participation in the 1972 MoMA exhibition 'Italy: The New Domestic Landscape' with the 'Vegetable Garden House' project. The film was developed with Documentary Campus Masterschool, presented at Dok Leipzig and the Torino Film Festival's IDS Academy, and won a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. Archival materials have been exhibited at the Vitra Design Museum, Design Museum Brussels, Canadian Centre for Architecture, Venice Architecture Biennale, Palazzo Strozzi, and Museo del Novecento.
