Eleonora Roaro's 'LA NUBE' Transforms Toxic Cloud into Post-Punk History

artist · 2026-05-11

Eleonora Roaro's audio-video project 'LA NUBE' reimagines a 1988 toxic cloud from the Farmoplant explosion in Massa-Carrara's Zona Industriale Apuana (Z.I.A.) as a post-punk narrative. Initially focused on the traumatic event, Roaro's research revealed decades of industrial pollution and a surprising local sentiment: the explosion was seen as liberation. A 1987 referendum had favored the plant's closure, but it went unheeded. The work, presented at her solo show at mudaC | museo delle arti Carrara (October 12, 2025 – January 25, 2026), comprises twelve post-punk tracks, especially industrial, created with musician Emiliano Bagnato. It was digitally released in January 2026. Roaro drew inspiration from the anarcho-punk group 'I figli della Farmoplant,' active in the early 2000s, who used environmental devastation imagery as protest. The project is part of ArtsLife's 'Un’opera a settimana' series, where artists reveal the inspiration and process behind a single work.
