Elena Granata's new book explores women's role in urban design
Elena Granata, a professor at Politecnico di Milano, has released her latest work, "Il senso delle donne per la città. Curiosità, ingegno, apertura" (Einaudi, 2023), which builds upon her 2021 publication "Placemaker." In her critique, she points out that projects such as Rem Koolhaas's Fondazione Prada fail to deliver collective advantages, unlike community-focused designs like Bjarke Ingels's Superkilen and the High Line. Granata emphasizes that women possess a distinctive ability to craft inviting environments and references historical matriarchal societies in Malta. She discusses the underrepresentation of women in architecture, urges for urban changes, and critiques the concept of a "masochistic city." The book ends with a call to share successful global practices and to explore neglected areas as potential "female cities."
