Elena Bellantoni's 'On the Breadline' Begins in Belgrade

artist · 2026-05-04

Elena Bellantoni's initiative, 'On the Breadline,' has successfully wrapped up its inaugural residency in Belgrade, thanks to the support of Beo_Project, and is set to proceed to Istanbul, Athens, and Palermo. This project, which received recognition in the fourth edition of the Italian Council (2018) under the curation of Benedetta Carpi De Resmini, draws inspiration from Yugoslav artist Predrag Matijevic. It examines the concept of 'breadline' as a catalyst for social equality and protest. In each location, Bellantoni will collaborate with female choirs to perform 'Bread & Roses.' In Belgrade, she worked alongside curators Zoran Erić and Una Popović, leading to three performances: 'Armed body,' 'Yu and Me,' and 'Blu White and Red,' the latter featuring symbolic gestures linked to anti-war demonstrations and the former Yugoslav flag.
