Elderly Street Artists: LATA 65, Souter Stormers, and Pittori Anonimi del Trullo

A global movement of elderly individuals is redefining street art and public art. In Lisbon, the nonprofit LATA 65 ("Power 65") trains seniors in graffiti techniques like stencil, stickers, and spray paint, transforming gray city corners with their tags and drawings. In Scotland, the all-female Souter Stormers crew, including 104-year-old Grace Brett, uses knitting and crochet to illegally cover urban furniture—benches, lampposts, phone booths—with colorful yarn installations in Selkirk, Ettrickbridge, and Yarrow. In Rome's Trullo district, the Pittori Anonimi del Trullo, a group of retired men (many former bricklayers) led by Mario D'Amico, paint murals on public housing walls, often collaborating with local poets and street artist Solo. In Louka, Czech Republic, 87-year-old Anežka Kašpárková decorates building facades with blue floral motifs reminiscent of Provençal porcelain. These initiatives challenge stereotypes of aging and demonstrate intergenerational community engagement.
