El Portal Visitor Center Reopens in Puerto Rico's El Yunque Rainforest with Resilient Design and Cultural Programming

architecture-design · 2026-04-17

Nearly ten years after Hurricanes Maria and Irma, Marvel Architects Puerto Rico has revamped El Portal, an $18 million visitor center located in El Yunque National Forest. To mitigate flooding, the building is raised 10 meters and is equipped to function as an incident command post. Lead landscape architect José Juan Terrasa-Soler notes that natural drainage systems are in place to handle over 150 inches of rainfall annually, complying with federal stormwater regulations. A south-facing roof is designed for solar panels, with funding from the US Department of Energy expected by March 2026. The center is projected to welcome 1.2 million visitors in 2026 and will host cultural events like the Arte Yunque festival, featuring artists such as Lena Galíndez and Frances Rivera González. Director Isabel Escalera García highlights the importance of working with local partners.
