El Museo del Barrio Reopens in New York with Liliana Porter Retrospective

exhibition · 2026-05-04

El Museo del Barrio, New York's premier institution for Latin American art, reopens on September 13 after a year-long renovation that transformed its structure. The museum upgraded HVAC, lighting, and built a new glass entrance. Staff cuts and leadership changes occurred: Susanna Temkin replaced curator Rocio Aranda-Alvarado (who left for the Ford Foundation), and Patrick Charpenel became executive director. Future work includes restoring the theater's hand-painted murals. During closure, the museum held two shows at university galleries organized by Noel Valentin. The reopening features two exhibitions: 'Liliana Porter: Other Situations' (curated by Humberto Moro, in collaboration with SCAD Museum of Art) showcasing the Argentine artist's iconic works, her first New York retrospective in 25 years; and 'Down These Mean Streets: Community and Place in Urban Photography' (curated by E. Carmen Ramos from the Smithsonian American Art Museum), named after Piri Thomas's bestseller about El Barrio. Founded in 1969 by Puerto Rican activists, the museum remains a vital cultural hub.
