El Anatsui to Transform Tate Modern's Turbine Hall in Autumn 2023
Tate Modern has announced that Ghanaian artist El Anatsui (Anyako, 1944) will be the next artist to take over its iconic Turbine Hall as part of the Hyundai Commission series. The installation will run from October 10, 2023, to mid-April 2024, following the current commission by Cecilia Vicuña. Anatsui, who lives in Nigeria, is renowned for his large-scale sculptures and tapestries made from found objects such as bottle caps, wood, and fabric. His work Ink Splash II (2012), a bottle-cap piece in Tate's collection, is a visitor favorite. Frances Morris, director of Tate Modern, expressed excitement about seeing Anatsui's inventive approach to the vast space. The Turbine Hall, a seven-story-high former generator room, has hosted landmark installations like Olafur Eliasson's The Weather Project. Anatsui's career highlights include the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 56th Venice Biennale (2015) and exhibitions at the British Museum and Centre Pompidou. Additionally, Tate Modern's upcoming spring season features two exhibitions opening in April: a major retrospective of Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828–1882) and a joint show exploring the parallel abstract languages of Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) and Piet Mondrian (1872–1944).
