Eight Women Artists Explore Abstraction with Depth at Von Lintel Gallery
Von Lintel Gallery presents "Driven to Abstraction," a group exhibition featuring eight contemporary women painters who challenge traditional flatness in abstract painting. The show, on view through July 29, 2011, emphasizes works that create illusionistic depth rather than adhering to conventional planar treatments. Canan Tolan destabilizes plaid patterns through contrasting surface yellows and recessive darks. Carrie Yamaoka employs resin-slick surfaces of deep blues and blacks, evoking inky, cosmic, and oceanic effects. Amy Ellingson and Lisa Corinne Davis demonstrate diagrammatic sensitivity in their geometric constructions. Dannielle Tegeder offers a fresh take on Suprematist forms, extending them toward a secondary canvas. Rebecca Smith's metal wall sculptures suggest forms slipping off the grid with liquid, melting gestures. Andrea Belag reveals chaotic underpinnings through big-stroke chromatic transitions, while Catherine Howe presents a sloppy tableau of ill-contained color areas and bursts of materiality. A closing reception is scheduled for July 28, 2011, from 5-8 PM as part of Chelsea Art Walk 2011.
