Eight Stolen Matisse 'Jazz' Plates Recovered in Brazil After Nine-Month Probe

cultural-heritage · 2026-08-14

Eight hand-signed plates from Henri Matisse's 1947 album Jazz, stolen last December from the Mário de Andrade Library in São Paulo, were recovered on August 13 after a nine-month investigation. Found in an apartment in São Bernardo do Campo, the works—including Le Clown and Le Cirque—are valued at over one million reais (€165,000). Suspect João Paulo Linhares de Araújo, 44, was arrested for receiving stolen goods. Police allege Laéssio Rodrigues de Oliveira, 53, Brazil's most notorious rare-book thief, masterminded the heist. Two armed men had overpowered a guard and two visitors during the theft. Five engravings by Cândido Portinari also stolen remain missing, possibly sold on the black market.
