A wave of exhibitions across Italy is reclaiming feminist art from the 1960s and 1970s, highlighting its historical and social significance. In Milan, FM Centro per l’Arte Contemporanea presents 'Il Soggetto Imprevisto. 1978 Arte e Femminismo in Italia' (until May 26, 2019), curated by Marco Scotini and Raffaella Perna, featuring over 100 Italian and international women artists. At PAC, 'O AMOR SE FAZ REVOLUCIONÁRIO' (until June 9, 2019) is the first Italian public institution retrospective of Anna Maria Maiolino, focusing on gender identity. Bergamo’s GAMeC hosts 'Io sono' (until May 19, 2019), a retrospective of Austrian artist Birgit Jürgenssen with over 150 works. In Florence, the Uffizi Galleries at Palazzo Pitti present Kiki Smith’s 'What I Saw on the Road' (until June 2, 2019), exploring female bodily fragility. Bologna’s MAMbo features Mika Rottenberg’s first Italian museum solo show (until May 19, 2019), curated by Lorenzo Balbi, with works like 'Ponytail (Orange)'. Street artist Miss Me and Benedetta Bartolucci created a 150-meter paste-up wall in Bologna for the Festival della Violenza Illustrata. At the Venice Biennale, the Italian Pavilion curated by Milovan Farronato includes Chiara Fumai (1978–2017), who re-reads the Western canon through feminism. Rome’s Galleria d’Arte Moderna presents 'Donne. Corpo e immagine tra simbolo e rivoluzione' (until October 13, 2019), with a section on feminist performance and film since the 1960s.
