Eight Books Placing the Body at the Center of Contemporary Art
A roundup of eight recent art publications, each exploring the centrality of the human body in modern and contemporary art. The selection includes: 'La seduzione dell’Antico' (Mandragora), catalog of a show curated by Claudio Spadoni at MAR in Ravenna, tracing the body's return from Duchamp to antiquity; Michela Beatrice Ferri's 'Sacro contemporaneo' (Àncora) on Christianity's incarnational paradox; 'Daido Moriyama in Color' (Skira), a rare color monograph of the Japanese photographer's street bodies, edited by Filippo Maggia and Fondazione Fotografia di Modena; Riky Kiwy's 'Un train peut en cacher un autre' (Aprime), documenting European train writers from 2003 to 2015; Jean Clair's 'Hybris' (Johan & Levi), a polemical essay on modern art's monstrous figures; Piero Gilardi's 'La mia biopolitica' (Prearo), covering four decades of his activist art from anti-psychiatry to the No TAV movement; 'Andres Serrano. Uncensored Photographs' (Silvana Editoriale), a comprehensive collection of his provocative bodily fluids imagery, coinciding with a Brussels exhibition; and Sarah Gordon's 'Indecent Exposures' (Yale U.P.), analyzing Eadweard Muybridge's nude sequential photographs. The article, by Marco Enrico Giacomelli, was published in Artribune Magazine #32.
