Egypt's Pharaohs Golden Parade Transfers 22 Royal Mummies to NMEC

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

On April 3, 2021, Cairo will host the Pharaohs Golden Parade, a historic event transferring 22 royal mummies from the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) in Fustat. The mummies, dating from the 17th to 20th Dynasties, include 18 kings and 4 queens, such as Seqenenre, Hatshepsut, and Ramses II. The parade, featuring fireworks and festivities, will place mummies in sterile containers and specially designed carriages. Upon arrival at NMEC, they will undergo two weeks of restoration before being displayed in the Royal Mummies Hall, whose decor evokes the Valley of the Kings. NMEC, designed by Egyptian architect El Ghazzali Kosseiba with exhibition spaces by Arata Isozaki, spans over 23,000 square meters. UNESCO provides technical support. The museum's collections are organized thematically and chronologically, including sections on Dawn of Civilization, The Nile, Writing, and more.
