EGO.M Team Realizes Achille Castiglioni's Final Design Project Cento3

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

The EGO.M team, a young Bologna-based company with a family background in architecture and design, has realized the final project of Italian design icon Achille Castiglioni: the Cento3 collection of writing instruments. The project was developed in collaboration with Gianfranco Cavaglià, Castiglioni's longtime friend and collaborator. The story begins in 2001 when Castiglioni and Cavaglià conceived a trilobed arch shape for a pen grip, which was never produced. After Castiglioni's death, the drawings were discovered behind a large angular mirror in his studio, now home to the Fondazione Achille Castiglioni. Over the years, several attempts to realize the project failed until 2020, when Carlo and Giovanna Castiglioni, the designer's children and president and vice president of the foundation, contacted EGO.M. The Cento3 collection includes a multi-function pencil, a pocket fountain pen, and a micro lead holder, all featuring the distinctive trilobed shape and made from graphene using FDM 3D printing, which minimizes material waste. The project represents a fusion of Castiglioni's original vision with contemporary technology and design thinking. EGO.M's values—culture, talent, audacity, personality, elegance, care, innovation, and design—guided their approach. The team also created their first tableware collection, /tra· spa· rèn· za/, during the pandemic, and recently participated in the Montecarlo Film Festival.
