Effimera: Relazioni Disarmoniche at MATA Modena Explores Precarious Digital Art
The exhibition "Effimera. Relazioni Disarmoniche" at MATA in Modena, curated by Fulvio Chimento and Luca Panaro, runs until May 22, 2016. It features works by Carlo Zanni, Eva and Franco Mattes, and Diego Zuelli that interrogate the ephemeral nature of digital media. Zanni's "Deny Thy Father & Refuse Thy Name" (2016) highlights the obsolescence of Flash software, displaying error pages on modern devices. Eva and Franco Mattes' "Emily's video" (2012) shows volunteers watching disturbing Darknet footage that is later deleted, leaving only documentation of their emotional reactions. Zuelli's "Tappezzeria" (2011) uses computer graphics to simulate a still-life photography process, questioning the direct link to reality. In "Image search result" (2014), the Mattes transform a randomly chosen browser word into physical objects like blankets and cups. Zuelli's "The Simple Combinations" (2015) generates daily animated images from an algorithm based on the date. Zanni's "Average Shoveler" (2005) forces viewers to play a video game bombarded with live images from ABC News, with no chance of winning, reflecting media saturation.
