Effetto Notte: Summer Cinema Returns to Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, Rome

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-05

The seventh edition of Effetto Notte, a free outdoor cinema series, is underway at Santa Croce in Gerusalemme in Rome, running until July 16, 2017. The program features restored Italian classics and recent releases. The series opened with Nanni Moretti's 'Palombella Rossa' (1989), digitally restored in 4K under the supervision of Moretti and cinematographer Giuseppe Lanci, using original negatives from Sacher Film and super8 footage. The restoration was presented by the Scuola Nazionale di Cinema and Cineteca Nazionale. Other highlights include Francesco Rosi's 'Le mani sulla città' (1963), restored from original negatives in 2K and previously shown at Venice 70, and Ettore Scola's 'Una giornata particolare' (1977), restored in 2014 under Luciano Tovoli with Scola's approval for a conservative approach. The Cineteca Nazionale is also crowdfunding for the next restoration: Luigi Zampa's 'Il medico della mutua' (1968) with Alberto Sordi, to be restored in 4K from original negatives and presented in 2018. Donations can be made on-site or to the Cineteca Nazionale. The series underscores the fragility of film heritage—about 70% of film production has been lost—and the importance of preservation.
