Edward Krasiński retrospective at Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam
The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam is hosting a retrospective of Polish avant-garde artist Edward Krasiński (1925–2004), running until October 15, 2017. Curated by Leontine Coelewij, the exhibition features over fifty works including sculptures, installations, photographs, manuscripts, and documentation of happenings. Krasiński, a key figure of the Polish avant-garde in the 1960s and 1970s, is best known for his 'Interventions'—blue tape placed horizontally at 130 cm height on canvases and everyday objects to create continuity between artwork and space. His multidisciplinary practice spanned painting, installation, and performance. The retrospective also highlights his studio in Warsaw, which became the Avant-Garde Institute after his death, supported by Maurizio Cattelan, Paulina Krasińska, and the Mondrian Foundation. A film by Babette Mangolte about the studio is also on view. Krasiński's early works include spatial paintings with steel wires, wood, and acrylic, and his 1964 sculpture 'Spear of the Atomic Age' installed in Koszalin. He co-founded the Foksal Gallery in Warsaw in 1966. For the 1970 Tokyo Biennale, he sent a telegram announcing a telex of the word 'BLUE' repeated 5000 times, which became the exhibited work.
