Edward Durell Stone's Celanese House in Connecticut Listed for $4 Million

Celanese House, a 1959 midcentury residence in New Canaan, Connecticut, designed by architect Edward Durell Stone, has been listed for $4 million. Stone, known for his work on the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and Radio City Music Hall, embraced New Formalism after travels in Europe. The four-bedroom, four-bath home was originally built to showcase Celanese Corporation's synthetic textiles and features a lattice facade and 12 pyramid skylights. It was owned for nearly half a century by inventor Frederick Willcox and his wife Velma, who lived there until her death in 2005. In 2008, it was purchased for $4.1 million by Joel Disend, retired chairman and CEO of a financial consulting company, and his wife Shen-Hsin Hung. The couple renovated the home over two years at a cost of about $2 million, updating floors, fireplaces, and bathrooms. The property was listed in April 2023 for $4.7 million, with price cuts bringing it to $4 million. Disend and Hung, who spent six months there during the pandemic, decided to sell to travel more. Inger Stringfellow of William Pitt Sotheby's International Realty holds the listing.
