Eduardo Kac's 'Adsum' Becomes First Artwork on the Moon in 2025
Eduardo Kac's artwork 'Adsum' successfully landed on the Moon on March 2, 2025, at 14:34 Eastern Time, marking the first instance of art being displayed in space beyond Earth. The work, a 1x1x1 cm glass cube weighing 2.5 grams on Earth and 0.41 grams on the Moon, was conceived by Kac in 2019. It features symbols representing human time (an hourglass) and the universe (infinity), described as a pictogram poem or sculptural poem. Launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on January 15, 2025, aboard a Falcon 9 rocket, the Blue Ghost lander carried 'Adsum' to the Mare Crisium site. Protected within a small steel pyramid filled with resin, the artwork was part of a mission by Firefly Aerospace. While other artists like Jeff Koons had been considered for such a milestone, Kac achieved this historic first. The project was initially presented in artpress issue 502 in September 2022. Photographs by Ben Haldeman, Warren Cockerham, and Eduardo Kac documented the preparation and launch, with NASA and Arizona State University providing imagery of the landing site.
