Eduardo De Filippo: A Life of Tragicomedy on Stage
Born in Naples on May 24, 1900, Eduardo De Filippo was a playwright, poet, director, and screenwriter who left an immense cultural legacy in 20th-century Italy. The illegitimate son of an actor and playwright, he grew up on stage alongside siblings Titina and Peppino. His childhood in Naples—marked by poverty, rebellion, and a sense of otherness—fueled his creativity. After failing in Rome, he returned to Naples, where he befriended Antonio De Curtis (Totò). Dissatisfied with acting in his father's company, he wrote his first play, "Farmacia di turno," with a bittersweet tone and unconventional ending. In 1931, the three siblings formed the company "I De Filippo." During this period, Eduardo wrote his most famous work, "Natale in casa Cupiello," a tragicomic portrait of family life centered on the elderly Luca Cupiello's innocent obsession with the nativity scene. The play reflects Eduardo's belief in theater's power to reveal beauty amid darkness. Influenced by Luigi Pirandello, Eduardo eventually split from Peppino due to creative differences—Peppino favored Neapolitan farce, while Eduardo sought a more international theater. He founded his own company. Beyond theater, Eduardo was a politician (appointed senator for life in 1981) and worked in cinema with Vittorio De Sica, Totò, and Luigi Comencini. He died in Rome on October 31, 1984.
