Eduardo Chillida's 'Soñar el espacio' at Conde Duque in Madrid

exhibition · 2026-04-24

The exhibition 'Soñar el espacio' (Dreaming Space) opened at Centro Cultural Conde Duque in Madrid in February 2025, organized by Fundación Ibercaja to mark the centenary of Eduardo Chillida. The show features about one hundred works, including sculptures in plaster, alabaster, forged iron, reinforced concrete, and chamotte clay (the famous Lurrak), as well as works on paper. The installation encourages close viewing, with smaller pieces offering intimacy and larger ones (up to two meters) engaging with architecture and light. Chillida, who called himself an 'architect of the void,' explored space and light through cavities in his alabaster works. The graphic works include geometric drawings, engravings in ink, charcoal, or sanguine, and collages from the Gravitaciones series (from 1985). Notable pieces include 'Boceto para la plaza de los Fueros de Vitoria' and 'Jaula de libertad.' The exhibition also presents expressive portraits of his wife, children, and himself. Curated by Alicia Vallina, the show runs until June 21, 2026.
