Edicola 518 in Perugia Transforms from Newsstand to Public Space After 10 Years

cultural-heritage · 2026-06-01

After a decade, Perugia's legendary Edicola 518 has ceased commercial operations to become a public urban oasis for reading and cultural exhibitionism. Inaugurated on June 1, 2026, the kiosk at Via Sant'Ercolano 42a now offers free reading materials, a wooden seating staircase, a stainless steel water fountain, and modular stools designed by Sicilian designer Giuseppe Arezzi. The transformation was guided by the participatory project 'L'Edicola che vorrei,' winner of the sixth edition of the Laboratorio Creatività Contemporanea call by the Italian Ministry of Culture's Direzione Generale Creatività Contemporanea. The collective behind Edicola 518—Antonio Brizioli, Antonio Cipriani, Valentina Montisci, and Kristina Borg—also runs the Paradiso 518 bookstore and Quasi 518 wine bar. A mural by Nic Alessandrini depicting Saint Herculanus, Perugia's patron saint, adorns the shutter. The space will host cultural programming and remain open daily as an unstaffed public area. A publication mapping Italian newsstand phenomena and an exhibition at Rocca Paolina are scheduled for October 2026.
