Eddie Otchere and Normski: The photographers who documented UK hip hop's birth
Eddie Otchere and Normski are receiving recognition for their pioneering documentation of the UK hip hop, drum 'n' bass, and garage scenes. Their contributions are showcased in the exhibition 'The Music is Black: A British Story' at V&A East, which will be open until 3 January 2027, commemorating 125 years of Black British music. Normski, whose real name is Norman Anderson, started his photography career in the early 1980s, capturing iconic images of artists like Public Enemy and N.W.A. Eddie Otchere, a Brixton native with Ghanaian heritage, served as the official photographer for Goldie's Metalheadz in the mid-1990s. Both have authored books: Normski's 'The Man With the Golden Shutter' and Otchere's 'Who Say Reload' and 'Spirit Behind the Lens.' Their notable works have been featured in publications such as i-D and NME.
