Edda Renouf's Material Conversations at Galerie 1900-2000

exhibition · 2026-04-23

From June 2 to July 21, 2010, Galerie 1900-2000 in Paris will host 'Edda Renouf, peintures et dessins 1973-2010,' highlighting the artist's four-decade journey into a 'conversation with matter.' Originally from Mexico, Renouf launched her career in New York and held her inaugural solo show in Paris in 1972. Drawing inspiration from minimalists such as Agnes Martin, she approaches paper and canvas with a sculptural mindset, reminiscent of pre-Columbian pottery. Her artworks incorporate a grid structure, light interaction, and incised lines that reflect color. The square format accentuates the materiality, with expansive canvases engaging the audience. Titles evoke seasonal themes, while music and sound motifs arise. Married to composer Alain Middleton, Renouf believes, 'Sound is a bridge to a cosmic dimension.'
