Ed Atkins' first Italian solo show spans Castello di Rivoli and Fondazione Sandretto

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Ed Atkins (born 1982, Oxford) presents his first Italian solo exhibition across two venues in Turin and Rivoli. At the Castello di Rivoli's third floor, works from 2013–2014—including *Even Pricks*, *Warm, Warm, Warm Spring Mouths*, *Ribbons*, *Hisser*, and *Happy Birthday!!!*—are shown as asynchronous video projections on large surfaces. The digital animations feature hyperrealistic avatars based on the artist's own face and voice, exploring mortality, illness, and contemporary malaise with sarcasm. At Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, new works engage biographically with his father's illness, while the three-channel installation *Safe Conduct* (2016) evokes airport arrival/departure boards. The airport, typically a site of security, is reimagined as a post-apocalyptic non-place where a zombified avatar is dissected by the same technology meant to protect it. The soundtrack uses Ravel's Bolero to build anxiety. Both exhibitions run until January 29, 2017. Curators include Marianna Vecellio, Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev (Castello di Rivoli), and Irene Calderoni (Fondazione Sandretto). A catalogue is published by Skira.
