Ecoweek 2021: Intersectional Justice in Architecture with Marialuisa Palumbo
The third edition of Ecoweek, a Greek NGO dedicated to social and environmental sustainability in architecture, is set to take place online in Italy on January 16-17, 2021. Architect Marialuisa Palumbo, who is also a researcher at the University of Toronto, curates the event, which emphasizes intersectional justice—a concept introduced by Kimberlé Crenshaw in the late 1980s. Palumbo critiques architecture as a means of oppression, referencing Le Corbusier's Plan Obus for Algiers, while also showcasing its potential for liberation through participatory methods, citing projects by Lacaton & Vassal. The program includes discussions led by female architects on Palestinian architecture and decolonization, along with workshops on public bathrooms and women artists in 16th-17th century Rome.
