Ecopixel turns children's drawings into recycled plastic objects at Milan Design Week
Ecopixel, a design research initiative, has turned children's instinctive drawings into practical items crafted entirely from recycled plastic. This collection, created in partnership with The British School of Milan and Asilo Infantile 'Domenico Boldrini' in Lago Maggiore, was showcased at Galleria Rossana Orlandi during Milan Design Week 2026, with assistance from Nicoletta Brugnoni. Rather than altering the children's artwork, the design team utilized them as precise blueprints, maintaining their original proportions, irregular shapes, colors, and compositional logic. Custom rotational molding systems were engineered to convert non-standard shapes into industrial products. Nearly forty drawings from participants aged four to seven were produced, leading to the selection of three objects: Mushroom Lamp (by 7-year-old Valeria), Spot Light (by Max), and Poised Flower Vase (by 4-year-old Valentino). The final products display visible remnants of the recycling process, featuring textured surfaces, embedded color fragments, and varied tonal irregularities. This project examines recycled plastic as a material that can be continuously transformed, with one child remarking, "materials only become waste when we throw them away." The initiative sparked conversations about sustainable production, design education, intuitive creativity, and alternative authorship in modern design.
