Ecology and Environmental Justice in Belgrade Exhibition
The exhibition 'Efekat Pregleda / Overview Effect' at MSUB – Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade addresses contemporary ecological issues to foster environmental awareness. Curated by Blanca de la Torre and Zoran Erić, the show runs until September 20, 2021. It is the culmination of a research project that began on October 2, 2020, with outdoor works in MSUB's Sculpture Park by over a dozen artists, followed by ECO_LAB roundtables on soil pollution, climate change, waste management, and state negligence. The exhibition features artists including Tea Makipa, whose '10 Commandments for the 21st Century' at the entrance calls for changing capitalist and anthropocentric dogmas. The show explores links between ecological issues and corporate imperialism, indigenous sovereignty, gender, extractivism, and decolonization. The project involves a transnational network including Pori Art Museum, Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno in Las Palmas, MUCA-Roma and Casa del Lago UNAM in Mexico City, Pilchuck in Seattle, ARTPORT_making wave in Frankfurt, ARTSail in Miami, and Society, Work and Politics Institute in Johannesburg. The curators emphasized sustainability: banning polluting petroleum-based materials and air transport of artworks, favoring local production, biodegradable, reused, and recycled materials.
