Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial 2009: Art as Rural Revitalization in Japan
The 2009 Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial, held from July 26 to September 13 in the Niigata region of Japan, featured 350 artists from 38 countries across a 760 km² open-air venue. Founded by Fram Kitagawa in 2000, the triennial aims to revitalize a rural area facing demographic decline, economic challenges, and environmental issues (including deadly earthquakes and the Niigata nuclear incident). Artists are invited to immerse themselves in the landscape and local communities, transforming abandoned houses and schools into site-specific installations. Notable works include Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller's rain-cycle installation that artificially recreates water flow and storm sounds; Jean-Michel Alberola's documentary-poetic film "Hiver et Printemps" shot in black and white in the hamlet of Koyamaru, with a planned sequel "Été et Automne"; and Claude Lévêque's "Dans le silence ou dans le bruit" at Kiriyama, featuring a sound piece by Gerome Nox, a glowing volcanic rock, rotating rice cultivation tools under blue light, and a circular plastic screen emitting mist. The triennial emphasizes in situ and in vivo artistic practice in dialogue with residents, positioning itself against globalized biennial clones.
