Eberhard Havekost's First Major French Exhibition at Frac Auvergne

Eberhard Havekost, a leading figure of the Dresden school and a key representative of Germany's pictorial revival, received his first substantial presentation in a French institution at Frac Auvergne in Clermont-Ferrand from November 21, 2008 to January 18, 2009. The dense exhibition, while not a full retrospective due to the venue's constraints (described as 'complicated' by the artist), featured works all created in 2008 specifically for this occasion. The paintings, derived from photographic sources, present an opaque iconography resistant to interpretation. They depict familiar yet standardized motifs—a tracksuit without a human presence, an oversized airplane window with a too-small engine, a shapeless animal skin, an unrecognizable studio window—disintegrated and reconfigured. One notable piece shows a cropped section of a bed in a sterile hotel room, its immaculate white sheets and distorted perspective creating an unsettling strangeness, reinforced by the enigmatic title 'Sauberkeit' (cleanliness). Curator Jean-Charles Vergne notes that Havekost pushes the filtering of reality to the maximum, redrawing a smoothed, lifted reality. The images undergo multiple transfers—digital photographs are computer-edited before being painted—resulting in a disconcerting blend of disembodiment and reincarnation. Havekost was also scheduled to exhibit at Galerie Hussenot in Paris from February 21 to March 31.
