EBBA Architects brings Istanbul courtyard feel to Cup of Joy's first London cafe

EBBA Architects has unveiled the inaugural London branch of Cup of Joy, an Istanbul-based coffee chain, located in Marylebone. Spanning 168 square meters over two levels, the design captures the essence of Istanbul's coffee culture, focusing on courtyards and transitional spaces. Founder Benni Allan emphasized the historical depth of the design, incorporating clay plaster to enhance both acoustics and aesthetics. Walls feature Portland stone slabs that transition into smaller pieces for grounding. The basement boasts clay ceilings and oak paneling, creating an intimate atmosphere, while extensive timber is used in the furniture, including a diagonal oak bar. The ceiling merges timber with opaque glass for ambient lighting. Key pieces, such as tables and stools, were crafted by the studio, alongside Danish wall lights and Frama chairs.
