Eataly Trieste Opens in Restored 19th-Century Wine Warehouse by Archea Associati

architecture-design · 2026-05-05

Eataly has opened a new store in Trieste, Italy, located in the restored former Magazzino del Vino (wine warehouse) on the Rive waterfront. The 19th-century building was purchased in 2005 and renovated by Fondazione CRTrieste with a total investment of €25 million. Initially intended for conference use, the commercial function was realized by Archea Associati, the architecture firm known for the Cantina Antinori in Tuscany. The project, led by architect Marco Casamonti, inserts a new autonomous glass volume inside the existing structure, creating a contrast between the historic shell and the contemporary interior. Large water basins mark the separation between old and new. The design respects the Soprintendenza's requirements to preserve original volumes and urban context. A monumental COR-TEN steel staircase and a backlit glass tile wall in the atrium evoke the building's former use as a wine storage facility. Archea Associati is also working on the Forevergreen commercial and residential tower and the National Stadium in Tirana, Albania, and the Changri-La Winery in Penglai, China. A future Eataly opening in Verona, Veneto, is planned.
