Eastern European Pavilions at the 2022 Venice Biennale
At the 59th Venice Biennale, which opened on April 20, 2022, with preview days for professionals, the national pavilions of Poland, Romania, Serbia, Latvia, and Slovenia presented exhibitions under the theme 'The Milk of Dreams.' Poland's pavilion features Małgorzata Mirga-Tas, who created 12 large patchworks inspired by the frescoes of Palazzo Schifanoia in Ferrara, reimagining them through the lens of Roma history. Romania's pavilion, curated by Adina Pintilie, presents a multi-channel video installation titled 'You Are Another Me,' exploring love, violence, gender fluidity, and disability. Serbia's pavilion by Vladimir Nikolić, 'Walking with Water,' consists of two video installations examining water as a fundamental element. Latvia's pavilion at the Arsenale showcases ceramic works by the duo Skuja Braden (Ingūna Skuja and Melissa D. Braden), with over 300 objects recreating their shared home in Aizkraukle. Slovenia's pavilion presents 'Without a Master' by Marko Jakše, featuring paintings from three decades that create dreamlike, dystopian worlds with bizarre figures and extinct animals, with fine sand covering the floor to enhance the hallucinatory atmosphere.
