Eastern European Beauty: Budapest Exhibition Challenges Fashion Photography Stereotypes

The Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center in Budapest presents 'Eastern European Beauty,' a group exhibition curated by Emese Mucsi that reexamines the visual representation of Eastern European aesthetics in fashion photography. Running until October 6, 2024, the show features seventeen photographic projects by Hungarian photographers including András Ladocsi and Éva Szombat. The exhibition critiques the Western fashion industry's appropriation of Eastern European imagery, citing the 2016 viral Vetements x Svmoscow Communist sweater worn by Kim Kardashian and the influence of Balenciaga creative director Demna Gvasalia as catalysts for renewed interest. The show is structured as a three-dimensional anthology, with one half presenting Hungarian photographers' perspectives on their profession and Eastern aesthetics, and the other half featuring expert selections of fashion photographs, photojournalism, and publications that redefine glamour and cool for the region. The exhibition aims to move beyond the stereotype of Eastern European models—such as Monika Jagaciak, Zuzanna Bijoch, Anja Rubik, and Janeta Samp—who dominated runways in the 2000s, and instead explore the complex visual language developed by regional fashion photographers.
