East Art Map: Reconstructing Eastern Europe's Hidden Art Histories

publication · 2026-04-22

The group of Slovenian artists known as IRWIN has compiled 'East Art Map: Contemporary Art and Eastern Europe,' an extensive examination of the Eastern European art scene since 1945. This initiative encourages artists, curators, theorists, and critics to capture the region's innovations and radical movements. It is hailed as the most extensive documentation project of contemporary art from the East, providing insight into totalitarian and post-totalitarian visual culture. Featuring selected significant artworks and artists, the book offers a blend of subjective interpretations and factual information. Established in 1983 in Ljubljana and co-founders of Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK), IRWIN includes Dusan Mandic, Miran Mohar, Andrej Savski, Roman Uranjek, and Borut Vogelnik. They have participated in various projects, including Kapital and NSK Embassy Moscow, and are also working on three art collections in Eastern Europe.
