Earshot awarded three-year studio bursary at Gasworks
Earshot, a non-profit established by artist Lawrence Abu Hamdan from Jordan, has secured a three-year studio bursary at Gasworks in south London. This initiative, funded by Spanish benefactor Mercedes Vilardell, includes an annual stipend and covers the studio's monthly rent. Abu Hamdan emphasized that this residency allows Earshot to function autonomously following its incubation with Forensic Architecture. The organization employs sound as a means to advocate for human and environmental rights, serving as a tool for justice. Its research has bolstered campaigns for Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, including the Saydnaya prison initiative. Upcoming projects involve creating an earwitness interview tool and studying coral reefs. From September 23-26, Abu Hamdan and Earshot will host an event called Repercussions at the Barbican Centre, featuring installations, performances, and a significant performance based on a sonic attack investigation during a silent vigil in Belgrade in March 2025, commissioned by Figura, with visuals by Hyeongji Yang and live music by James Hoff.
