E-commerce fashion battle: Amazon vs Alibaba for luxury market dominance

market-auction · 2026-04-27

The pandemic has accelerated the shift to online luxury shopping, with e-commerce now representing 23% of global fashion sales ($58 billion in 2020, up from $39 billion in 2019). Unlike other industries, fashion lacks a single dominant online player, sparking a trans-Pacific war between Amazon and Alibaba. Richemont (owner of Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels) and Alibaba announced a $1.1 billion investment in Farfetch, while Kering (Gucci, Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen) added $50 million to its Farfetch stake. Amazon launched Luxury Stores for Prime members and virtual storefronts in the US and Europe. Alibaba's Tmall Luxury Pavilion has attracted nearly 200 high-end brands. Chinese consumers, expected to account for $178 billion in luxury spending by 2025, are now shopping from home due to travel restrictions. LVMH (Louis Vuitton, Dior, Celine), the world's largest luxury group with €53.7 billion revenue, prefers its own platform 24 Sèvres (launched 2017, still loss-making). Smaller players like Mytheresa (€450 million net revenue in 2020, +19%) and MatchesFashion (valued at ~$1 billion three years ago) compete with curated assortments. Resale is booming: Depop, Vestiaire Collective, ThredUp attract young consumers, and LVMH is exploring the sector. Even niche vintage shops like Chiara Menage's London-based online store (featured in The Crown) thrive, with some proceeds donated to domestic abuse support.
