Dylan Carlson and Princess Thailand Discuss Art and Music
Dylan Carlson, the sole constant member of the drone metal band Earth, gave an interview discussing his definition of art and music. Born in Seattle in 1968, Carlson founded Earth in 1990 in Olympia. His influences include AC/DC, Black Sabbath, The Melvins, La Monte Young, and Terry Riley. Earth's music has evolved from distorted minimalism to country, jazz rock, and folk, with some reviews comparing it to Ennio Morricone. Carlson also has a solo project, Drcarlsonalbion, which released a melancholic soundtrack for a western film in 2014. He is known for having lived with Kurt Cobain and providing the gun Cobain used to commit suicide. Princess Thailand, a French post-punk/noise rock band formed between Paris and Toulouse, also participated. Their sound blends dreamy atmospheres with influences from Savages, Joy Division, The Cure, and Idles. After their 2018 debut album, they released their second album this year. The band includes Aniela Bastide (vocals), Jean Pellaprat (drums), Patrick Jeanson (guitar), Maxime de Guibert (bass, keyboards), and JB Mancave (guitar, keyboards), who also plays in The Telescopes. Both artists shared personal definitions of art and music, with Carlson calling art "any creative endeavor" and Princess Thailand's spokesperson describing art as "a process to go where nobody expects you to go." The interview was conducted by Samantha Stella for Artribune.
