Dürer's Melencolia I and Italian 20th-Century Art at Mart Rovereto

The Mart in Rovereto presents 'Dürer. Mater et Melancholia,' a winter exhibition juxtaposing Albrecht Dürer's masterpieces with 70 works by Italian 20th-century artists. Key Dürer pieces from the Fondazione Magnani Rocca include the 'Madonna and Child' from the late 15th century, engravings 'Melencolia I' (1514), 'St. Jerome in His Study' (1514), and 'Adam and Eve' (1504). The exhibition explores themes of maternity and melancholy. The 'Madonna and Child' shows Jesus holding strawberry branches, alluding to martyrdom, and is compared to works by Umberto Boccioni, Gino Severini, and Giovanni Segantini. 'Melencolia I' depicts a winged figure in inaction, surrounded by tools of creative and scientific effort, interpreted as a superior being blocked by thought. This engraving is paired with Achille Funi's 'Malinconia' (1930), Mario Sironi's 'Figure with Vase' (1924), and Giorgio de Chirico's 'Self-Portrait with Mother' (1922). Other artists include Felice Casorati, Carlo Guarienti, Giorgio Morandi, and Rembrandt's 'Doctor Faust' (c. 1652). The exhibition runs at Mart Rovereto, curated by Fausto Politino.
