Durand-Ruel Impressionist Collection Estimated at €43M Heads to Christie's Paris

market-auction · 2026-07-29

Christie's will auction 62 works from the Durand-Ruel family collection on October 22, 2026, during Art Basel Paris week. The collection, assembled by legendary dealer Paul Durand-Ruel (1831-1922) and passed down through generations, is estimated between €30.4 and €43.4 million. Highlights include Claude Monet's 'Bord des falaises à Pourville' (1882, estimate €11-15M), Pierre-Auguste Renoir's 'Jeunes filles au bord de la mer' (€4-6M), Alfred Sisley's 'La Route du Cœur-Volant en hiver, Louveciennes' (€2.5-3.5M), Camille Pissarro's 'Le Louvre, soleil d’hiver, matin' (€2-3M), and Pablo Picasso's 'Nature morte au gruyère' (€2-3M). Many works were acquired directly from the artists and have remained in the family for over a century. The Monet painting, comparable to museum pieces at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal, was exhibited at the landmark 1905 Grafton Galleries show in London. This sale follows a record for Monet in Paris: 'Vétheuil, effet du matin' sold for €10.2 million at Sotheby's Paris on April 16, 2026. The global record for Monet remains 'Les Meules' at $110.7 million at Sotheby's New York in 2019. The collection will be on view at Christie's Paris from October 16 to 21.
