Dumb Type to Present New Sound Installation for Japan at 59th Venice Biennale

The Japanese artist collective Dumb Type will represent Japan at the 59th Venice Biennale with a new sound installation. Founded in 1984, the group will showcase their work in the Giardini pavilion using original parametric speakers and laser systems. The biennale runs from April 23 to November 27, 2022. ArtReview conducted interviews with participating artists and curators, publishing responses daily. Dumb Type mentioned being influenced by many artists in their youth but now draws inspiration primarily from nature. They cited Hans Haacke's 1993 German Pavilion installation "Germania" as a memorable Venice experience. The collective looks forward to international exchanges and peace during the event. All exhibitions hold equal importance for them, including the Venice Biennale.
