Ducal Apartments Reopen at Castello di Miramare with 1930s Design

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

The private apartments of Duke Amedeo of Savoy and his family at Castello di Miramare have reopened to the public. The Duke, his wife Anna d'Orléans, and their daughters Margherita and Maria Cristina lived there from 1931. The Duke resided until 1937, while the Duchess and daughters stayed intermittently until mid-1943. Architect Alberto Riccoboni reconfigured the spaces in 1930, creating modern interiors with rationalist and art deco elements, contrasting with the castle's opulent rooms. The apartments display original furnishings, paintings, and objects evoking the public and private lives of the royals. Museum director Andreina Contessa stated that the reopening inaugurates the 20th-century section, highlighting the castle's evolution as a noble residence through historical, political, and stylistic changes.
