exhibition · 2026-04-30

Dubravka Lošić has been chosen to represent Croatia at the 61st Venice Biennale, scheduled from 9 May to 22 November 2026. Her exhibition, 'Compelled by Fright and Beauty', will take place at Palazzo Zorzi. Lošić's artistic portfolio includes various series such as 'Rains Paris' (2018), 'Alba Albula' (2019), 'Tondo' (2020–25), 'Imago Anima' (1995–97/2012–13), 'Sharks' (1986–89/2013), 'Libertas Bells' (2014–26), and 'Rosary' (1987–2026). She describes her creative method as establishing rigid frameworks that she allows to be influenced by spontaneous impulses, utilizing diverse materials from metals to wool. Her art often delves into themes of containment, protection, and silence as forms of resistance. Lošić advocates for national pavilions to be venues for unrestrained artistic expression, devoid of censorship or propaganda, viewing art as a universal medium rich in social and political significance. She perceives the Venice Biennale as crucial for fostering dialogue and expanding viewpoints. Influenced by her personal journey and global issues, her work aims to foster spaces for reflection and healing. Lošić frequently showcases her art in unconventional venues, including abandoned factories, war-damaged hotels, repurposed churches, and 15th-century fortresses. This interview was conducted by ArtReview in collaboration with Versace.
