Dubai Prepares for Expo 2020 with Green Infrastructure and 3D-Printed Skyscraper
Dubai is accelerating preparations for Expo 2020, titled 'Connecting Minds, Creating the Future,' running from October 20, 2020, to April 10, 2021. The city aims to become the most sustainable metropolis globally, with photovoltaic-covered boulevards meeting 50% of the exhibition site's electricity needs and zero-emission cable cars and buses. A notable project is the world's first 3D-printed skyscraper, developed with US startup Cazza Construction. CEO Chris Kelsey praised Dubai's visionary leadership under Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, aligning with the government's 2016 strategy to make 25% of buildings 3D-printed by 2030. On the cultural front, the Jameel Arts Center Dubai, designed by Christopher Lee of Serie Architects (offices in London, Mumbai, and Beijing), will open in spring 2018. Located on Dubai Creek, the center spans over 1,000 sqm of exhibition space and 300 sqm for research on Arab artists and movements, plus flexible event spaces, a cinema terrace, sculpture garden, café, restaurant, and bookshop. Dutch landscape architect Anouk Vogel designed desert-plant courtyards. Partnerships include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum (supporting the Islamic Art Gallery and Jameel Prize), and the Prince's School of Traditional Arts. Art Jameel also supports projects across Saudi Arabia, such as the Open-air Sculpture Museum in Jeddah.
