Droupadi Murmu's Historic Presidency Examined as Political Tokenism in India

In July 2022, Droupadi Murmu was inaugurated as India's 15th president, achieving several significant milestones: she is the youngest president, the first born post-independence, the second female president, and the first from a tribal background. Her election is perceived as a tactical move by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to attract tribal voters ahead of the 2024 elections. Hailing from a Santhal tribal family in Odisha, Murmu's career included roles as a clerk and teacher before she entered politics with the BJP. Although her role is primarily ceremonial, it enhances the BJP's image of inclusivity while addressing calls for a distinct Sarna religious code. As Jharkhand governor, she has endorsed BJP initiatives and opposed detrimental legislation. Tribal populations continue to be among the most disadvantaged in India, facing exploitation amid evolving legal frameworks.
