Drought Reveals Bronze Age Stilt System in Oglio River, Italy

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-27

A drought in Italy has exposed archaeological remains from various periods. On July 4, 2022, a system of wooden stakes likely from the Bronze Age (2300–700 BC) emerged from the dry bed of the Oglio River near Canneto sull'Oglio, between Mantua and Cremona. The Klousios study center reported the find to the local Soprintendenza. In Rome, the ruins of the Neronian Bridge, built under Emperor Nero in the 1st century AD, surfaced on July 5 due to the Tiber's low level. In Iraqi Kurdistan, a 3,400-year-old city, likely Zakhiku of the Mitanni Empire, emerged from the Mosul reservoir between early 2022 and mid-June. In the lower Po Valley, walls of the vanished town of Polesine San Vito appeared between December 2021 and March 2022. A German Sd.Kfz 11 half-track from WWII was recovered from the Po near Sermide in March 2022, containing soldiers' personal effects and ancient pottery. Near Vercelli, medieval bridge blocks emerged from the Sesia River. In Minnesota, an 8,000-year-old human skull was found in the Minnesota River bed and identified as belonging to a young Native American from the Upper Sioux Community.
