Drone Strike Targets UAE Nuclear Plant, Strains Iran Ceasefire

On Sunday, a drone attack struck the Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates, igniting an electrical generator located on the facility's perimeter. Although no group has taken responsibility, Iran is suspected, especially given its recent threats against the UAE, which has been hosting Israeli troops and Iron Dome defenses amid the ongoing war. This incident marks the first assault on the four-reactor plant since the conflict began. The $20 billion Barakah facility, which has been operational since 2020 with South Korean assistance, is the Arab world's inaugural commercial nuclear power plant, supplying 25% of the UAE's energy. The UAE's nuclear regulator assured that safety was not compromised and that all units function normally. This strike occurs during Iran's ongoing control over the Strait of Hormuz, affecting global energy supplies, while the US has blocked Iranian ports as ceasefire talks falter. President Donald Trump suggested that hostilities might reignite, and escalating clashes between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon pose a threat to a separate ceasefire. The UAE has entered into a stringent '123 agreement' with the US, which prohibits domestic uranium enrichment and reprocessing, requiring the country to obtain uranium from external sources.
